Well, I'm spreading out a bit and getting some more room. We did a household room shift and I can spread my wings a bit more! I painted the walls this great off white and POW! It really added a lot of light to the room. It was a wonderful dark blue when it was the library/office space and although I loved the romance and dim light, it just wasn't practical for my need to see what I am doing (Ha, Ha Ha) I have tons more to do with clean up, computer desk space and hunting for an old fireplace mantel. More pics later...........

Guglhupf Winter Market was a Blast!

If you are ever in the Durham, NC area I highly recommend eating at the Guglhupf! http://www.guglhupf.com/ An amazing cafe/bakery that has a great layed-back atmosphere and great art on the walls. The Guglhupf Winter market was last weekend and I had a blast! Above is a quick shot of my little booth before the days festivities unfolded. It is such a fun, tiny event but it packs a punch with entertainment!!

It was a cold morning setting up but we had heaters and coffee to keep us going!

I just LOVE Pam Gutlon. She is the owner of the Outsiders Art & Collectibles gallery that I sell thru in the Durham area. She is so much fun to hang out with! She has a great passion for unique folk art and celebrates not just art but the artist too. http://www.outsiders-art.com/

Working away as time ticks by at such a fast pace! I can hardly believe it is December already. I just love this new gal I am working on. She is about 30 inches tall and heavy! I stuffed her with raw cotton. She is demanding a tall hat and a proper coat. I may have to postpone her for a little while and work on some crazy flying fairies - I will be at the Winter Market in Durham, NC in a few weeks with a group from the Outsiders Art Gallery. Odd is good! Can't wait.

A Visit to the Notforgotten Farm....................

I was lucky enough to attend an open house at the amazing studio of Lori Brechlin of Notforgotten Farm. She is an amazing designer and artist that creates rug hooking designs, stitching designs and one-of-a-kind primitive folk art. I had to make sure my jaw stayed shut as I oooowed and awwwwed over this amazing wall full of her design samples!!!! Argh!!!! To die for! I fell in Love with her fuzzy welcoming crew! Pinocchio (the chocolate colored one) stole my heart for sure.

Her shop/studio was pure magic!

Her shop porch was so prim and perfect!

I stepped inside and gasped! It was so welcoming, and full of amazing works and discoveries!

The Christmas tree was magical and she had these adorable mohair teddy bear heads - I wanted them all but had to be on my best behavior with my holiday budget but there was no way I could leave without the painting done by Lori below! I am a redhead and you don't see much primitive artwork representing red hair sooo - I HAD to have it! So yes, I say it is a portrait of me with my evil twin. (I don't really have a twin or a sister -tee hee) Oh- yes, I know - she paints too!!!!!! Lori Brechlin is amazing - rug hookin, stitching, dolls, folk art, painting - Yep - she does it all !!!!!

My gorgeous sunflowers have all withered and died and my chickens are putting on their extra fluff. Egg production has slowed as we enter the shorter days. Sigh....... goodbye beloved Fall. Oh, Queen Winter , I feel your wicked frozen touch as you journey this way. Please be kind this season.

Finally Catching my Breath After the Country Living Fair

Wow!!!!! I am still exhausted from the Country Living Show last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. It was an amazing and successful show!!!! Thanks to all of you that visited my booth and showered me with wonderful compliments and a very special thank you to all that adopted my crazy creations. The show was a non-stop whirlwind of business!!!!! I barely had time to take any pictures, so pardon the lousy shots.
Yes, I am very camera shy but here I am (the tall redhead) with my awesome sister-in-law Sarah. I could not have done it without her! She is amazing. She was my anchor in times of all crazy thinking and stress ( about 98% of the show- tee hee) My other anchor was my beloved hubby that was on serious "daddy duty" for the last week. He did a great job keeping our little ones out of my hair and the muscle man behind my booth design/set up.

It was a cold and wet Friday morning but the weekend just got better and better from there. I learned many lessons in regards to booth set up. Lots of re-working for next time. Well, I am back to do what I love to do most - CREATE!!!!!! I have yet more new works underway and will be loading some works to my Etsy site soon. I have more exciting news to post later too- think Prims magazine Fall issue (hint, hint)! Cheers - Lurena

It is a cool, rainy, Fall like day today - my favorite! It has been a while since I have posted here in Blog land and the clock is ticking for the Country Living Fair. It is hard to believe that it's just a few weeks away. Yikes! I have been sewing feverishly and spending lots of time in my land of enchanted thoughts and characters. This angel is one of my favorite creations for the Country Living Fair.

She is wearing a warm Autumn color pallet - but I must admit it was hard parting with these wonderful vintage buttons I've had stashed away.

Well, I just finished drawing the face on this doll and she screamed "I am the Queen!" Well, she does look a bit Regal and in charge. I shall honor yee Majesties requests for a gown.
She first rummaged through my vintage rhinestone jewelry and found herself a crown. She then demands her frocks be made from fine silk, linen, lace and vintage ruching. Yikes, she is very fussy. I (being her humble servant) will try to satisfy her request but not without adding a little grunge too! Heee Heee Heeee

Yep, like I said before Glitter and Grunge - the perfect combo.

Before I start this humble little tour, I want to thank Karen Valentine at My Desert Cottage for organizing another fabulous year of Where Bloggers Create studio tours. Now, sneak on down stairs with me and take a super quick sneak peek into my little messy world of "Tattered Moon."

I live in an 1874 Farmhouse that we have been working on for the last 7 years. Here is where I create one-of-a-kind original dolls in the wee hours of the night. My studio space is still a construction zone. So that is the excuse for this mess I'm about to share with you right??? Ha, not so. The truth is, I am crazy busy working away for the upcoming Country Living Fair in Ohio. I am very excited to be at the show this coming September - for details visit www.countryliving.com/fair and come see me. Sooooo on to the mess! Here we go!

This is one of my main tables that I work at. This is where I do most of my designing, hand stitching and detail work. It is always loaded with projects I'm working on and littered with materials I am inspired by and incorporate into my dolls.

This is the other end of the table with my recently acquired stash of old laces and linens. I am currently working on a group of shabby chic /primitive style angels.

This is my studio pal Ethel. Hey, what can I say - when you work late into the night and everyone else is in bed, I need someone to talk too right?

I just love 17th - 18th century fashion. I am obsessed with detail and hats.

Fabric. Fabric. Fabric. I am a fabric Junkie and have no shame! This is a couple of shots of my many stacks.

I love old suitcases. They are great to use for storage and also work well for transporting and showing my dolls at shows. They are sure hard to find these days. I remember when no one wanted them and you could get them for 5 bucks at the antique markets.

Organization is something I am really trying to get better at. These simple storage boxes with labels work magic in my space.

Watch out for "Hypno Pumpkin Fairy" He has been known to hypnotize visitors and play nasty little tricks and hide buttons. One of many mischief makers in the studio.

The little brown jewelry box is full of old findings. When you open the drawers it plays the theme from the Godfather! Lol!! Love it.

This is my one of my beloved machines! I have been sewing on this Pfaff machine since the 80's. It is my rock.

So Many Distractions.........

Well, it has been a while since I have posted anything. My life has been really nutty lately. Lots and lots of distractions! Big storms, tornado watches, family illnesses, house projects, garden work, kids and chickens! Yes, I said chickens! We are raising chickens for the first time and they just went out into the coop this last week. They are 6 weeks old and just adorable. I've been a worried and nervous "Mother Hen" myself over these little babes. There has been a lot of drama and challenges over their health. It was a rough start with lots of losses. Argh my heart has been heavy lately with all that is going on in my life. I am trying to get focused again on my work! This is my therapy - this is my souls medicine - to create! I have had lots of kind words and honks in town today. Tee Hee! That's right! I've been "outed" in the Northern Virginia Daily Newspaper. I almost turned down the interview but my hubby made me do it! :) Jessica wrote an amazing story out of my ramblings during our interview. If you are ever traveling through my neck of the woods here in the Shenandoah Valley, you gotta check out Hip & Humble in Strasburg, Virgina. They are located in the big "dome room" (#215) at the Great Strasburg Emporium. It is a collection of fun, shabby, primitive, vintage and yes - HIP! antiques and interiors. I am very excited for the opportunity to display and sell my crazy and prim dolls amongst this booty of treasure. I am working away tonight and I've got the fireplace cranking in my little studio. I am so tired of the cold. I always get a case of the winter blues in January, February and most of March. I miss true bright sunshine and the warmth. My spirit really struggles to create and be productive. I just want to hibernate. Anyway, enough booo hoooing! I just finished drawing this little gals face. I think I will call her Olivia. She is crying out for a fashionable hat and a vintage style frock. We'll see what unfolds. I just delivered a group of dolls to a fun shop in Strasburg, Virginia. I'll share more on that later when I can get some great pics to share. I want to bring home all there furnishings!!

October Finds

The weather today was amazing and we knew the local Flea Market would be hopping. So we cruised over and enjoyed an afternoon of junking and hunting. Lots of great finds and I wanted to share a few of my favorites. Halloween is days away................. yippeeee!

Lots of great findings in this box. Awesome stuff to add details to my dolls, doll hats and mixed media pieces.

Soooo UGLY, it was love at first site!

This leather suitcase is awesome! It's in great shape and a steal at ten bucks! I love to use suitcases for display at shows. My dolls really look great sitting in them and they double as a way to pack and get them there too. I plan to get to more shows in 2011. If anyone has suggestions of shows you think I might be a good fit for, please let me know. I fell in love with the wooden caddy too. Good piece of folk art with the handle fashioned out of a crochet mallet. I just love old stuff. It has so much character - I wish I knew the history behind some of what I find. Where it's been, how many lives it's interacted with, etc. Some stuff holds so much energy, oh the stories it could tell. Well, I'm off - happy hunting and haunting to all.

Well, I have been very busy and with that comes super messy!! My drawers of various trims has turned into a total tangled nightmare, soooo I am making efforts to keep them de-tangled. It helps to actually see what I've really got crammed in all my drawers too. I had an "A-duh" moment and decided to use recycled paper towel tubes to wrap all my trims on and store them away! Simple.... why didn't I think of this long ago. It's a cheap quick solution. I'm off to wind some more. I may put my 4 year old to work!

As I noted in my previous entry - I am opening an Etsy shop! Yippeeeee. I created the bones of the shop ( policies, profile, etc.) and have now begun my listings. WoW!!! This is a lot of work. I just want to sew and create. I need a personal admin. Ha HA ha. If any of you Etsyians out there have any words of wisdom, suggestions or critiques for my new venture- please make mention of them in my comments section. I'm having trouble feeling creative and productive this evening. I thought if I posted a pic of my latest works I would feel a little more into it. Do you like the "Where is Waldo" guy in the background peeking above their shoulders? HA!!! I didn't notice when I snapped the shot on my work table. I love it! He or she?? is who I am working on tonight. I've had the body and facial details done for a while. Tonight I am finally dressing it and making a little tutu for it. Halloween is getting closer!! Dragon's heat......

July's heat was that of a dragon's fiery breath- torching all my flowers in the garden this season. I still find beauty in the colors and texture of dried hydrangeas. I'm hoping for lots of August thunder storms to draw us nearer to Autumn. I long for the Fall season...................

Before we get started, I really want to thank Karen Valentine @ My Desert Cottage for this awesome event! OK, the kids are asleep, hubby is in bed reading and the house is quiet - let's head to my little studio called Tattered Moon.
I live in an old 1874 farm house and after my two children were born, I gave up my large upstairs studio for a playroom and now share the downstairs large library room with my husband for work space. I won't be showing his half of the room but if your into old die cast cars and collections of Sci-fi books - email me and I'll send you pics! Ha Ha... Here is one of my bookshelves piled high with fabrics Atop sit some of my favorite Dark Dudes, Prom Ghouls and freaks. I still use the same machine I began my doll making from the early 1980's. I absolutely LOVE my machine and don't know what I would use if she went to machine heaven. I drive her like a Porsche and she just keeps chugging along. I have my Yoda mascot sitting on top -"use the force"
This doll has been in the works this last few weeks. I am waiting on some yummy ribbon I ordered for her bodice.
This bookshelf contains inspiring books and magazines like Where Women Create. I absolutely love this publication. I am so inspired by it and being a mother of two
(Eli 2 and Skye 4) it gives me hope and encouragement as I am getting back on the "creative horse" this past year and trying to grow my business again. I am finally feeling like I can breathe some creative air again with the kids becoming more independent. There are jars and boxes of buttons, scissors and tidbits. OK, yes I know - it is my dumping zone and no I didn't clean it up for the shoot. This is my space in the rough! My wall board is my fun spot. I'll post info about shows to check out, thank you notes from clients and artwork from my kids. on the corner of my main work table sits my "goodie box" I usually fill it with things that are grabbing my attention amongst all my treasures in my space. I can then focus and get inspired from the collection of textures and colors. I am starting to make some pin keeps and make-do's. What fun!
This guy is sitting on a chair with a pile of trim that overflows from my trim cabinet. It has sliding glass doors on it and the pictures were awful from the glare. Here is just a sneak peek of a few from the inside. This guy is trouble in the studio! Fredrico Diablo - his expression says it all! This is my favorite piece in my space. It is an old wardrobe that I snagged at a local auction for just $25 bucks. It is wonderful and full of charm. The drawers have some graffiti on them from children of past ownership like keep out, Rebecca's drawer, and the name Marvin.
On top sits a collection of old suitcases. They make wonderful storage boxes and are great display cases for my work at shows. On the front door of the wardrobe is "Torrence the tie guy" he watches after them all so my kids won't run off with them for dress up. I just love old ties! Photo boxes are a must in my space. I can organize and easily find items with these labeled boxes like buttons,old keys,threads,wire and feathers. Some more treasures, trinkets and dolls that are about.

Fabric Shop Stop....................

If you are ever passing thru the small Virginia town of Floyd, you may want to check this place out! It is an old three story schoolhouse that has been turned into a fabric shop. The fabric shop was established in 1971 and I think they may still have some merchandise from the opening! It is like stepping back in time. Very old school - but cool! They have a little bit of everything in there! I couldn't resist a scary fake fur that looks like it came off a Yak in Nepal - Whoa! I'm thinking funky monsters for Halloween. Hmmmm...............

Bargain of the day............

I got up early to go junking at the Stephens City Flea Market yesterday and this is my prize find of the day! An awesome antique metal tin with some old buttons, books of matches, threads and pins. OK, the best part is............. it was a dollar! One dollar! What a steel. I am beginning to cut out some bodies today for my next group of 17th Century dolls. The first group sold and are lounging about in a gorgeous 1920's home in Winston-Salem, NC. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday weekend.

Playing with Pink.................

So my daughter (who just turned 4) says to me today, "Mommy, why don't you ever play with pink?" Well, I took it to heart. Tonight I am playing with pink and everything I have that is "Ultra Femme." Yes I know, a far cry from my usual dark aesthetic. It is a great mental stretching exercise.

Yes, I am seeing black & white today. Argh! Nothing fun on the creative front today, just working on our mud room. Went with a nice boring white paint for the walls. I think these are the only white walls in our entire house! It will really keep it light and fresh looking. I am loving the old school black & white floor. Went down super easy. My soon to be 2 year old son learned the words "wet paint" today. Tee Hee

An Incredible and Magical Tale

Just finished an incredible book. The 13th Tale by Diane Setterfield is a wonderful Goth-like mystery. I was so moved and enchanted by the story. The characters and scenery is so inspiring for my work. I love to be transported by magical literature.

Happy New Year to all! I have finally taken some time to download some photos I took just before the Holidays. I made a trip to NYC and saw the most AMAZING window display of Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs designs! Argh!!! They are absolutely gorgeous! Rich in color and detail! Their works just makes you want to run off to their private little wonderland! I couldn't even tell you what department store it was - I was awe struck! To blogging I will go, to blogging I will go........ OK, yes I have been smelling to much paint fumes! What a busy time of year! To much to do and not enough time! I have been slow in the studio these past few weeks. I took a wonderful getaway weekend to NYC with my sister-in-law. It was awesome. No kids, no hubby - just gal pal time and fun!!! We are off to South Carolina for Thanksgiving next week and Boom! it's December. Lots of house projects under foot still, but the major roof project has been completed. Wow! Yes completed. Something in this house with closure - amazing! Well, Happy Turkey Day to all!

I have been busy, busy, busy with kids, garden and our old house problems - er, I mean projects. None-the-less, I will be launching an update to my website with Halloween critters in the next week. Summer is speeding by!

Summer is speeding by and I have been so very busy. We are up to our eyeballs in "This old house" projects! We will be finishing our painting project in the Foyer and we are now dealing with a leaky roof/wall in the master bath. This was an addition to the house in the early 90's, our farmhouse was build in 1874. It has been messed with over the years by various owners. We bought is about 5 years ago. Our labor of love has now turned that ugly corner of being a consuming, stressful and obsessive project! Oh, did I mention never ending too. Dealing with projects, plus my 3 and 1 year old, have not left me much time in the studio. Oh, and yes, I am in the middle of relocating my studio space. Arggg!!!! I' trying really hard to be patient and not get too overwhelmed. I would just love to have uninterrupted, peaceful creative time again. None the less, I still have Halloween dolls in the works. Off to get my son up from his nap. Ta Ta yes, this was my bitch-o-log!

Inspired by my new Fall palette of muted Pomegranate, "Yummy Yack Green", Burnt Umber, "Flippant Fuscia" and deep Plums. Ghouls and "Dark Dudes" are coming to life. My work table is a mess! My 3 year old loves to get into it too! She is learning to use scissors and I feel like I am living with Edward Scissor Hands. She is cutting up everything she can get her hands on. It looks like it snowed in our fabulous wonderland! Yippeee

Reading a great book this eve. Taking Flight by Kelly Rae Roberts. Oh yes, the struggles of Art and Fear! I relate! My inner voices are using me as a punching bag these days. It is really tough getting back on the creative horse after taking a break for a year or so while having my two kids. Finding the time and energy to create is a major struggle, not to mention the challenge of just being focused. My expectations are unrealistic I am told. My children are only three and one. I am hard on myself I know, I cannot "produce" like a use too. I shall chant - One day at a time and one dream at a time....................
